Deerhunter is undoubtedly one of the most influential band in the world right now. Calling their music "Ambient Punk", they made records, which heard as a whole, makes you feel like being in a dream. I expected their show to be good. But not this good.
They were loud. So loud that you're numbed to the bone. It was so loud I thought I heard melodies within melodies. It was so loud you were practically in another world, transfixed and hypnotized by the sheer NOISE of it all. That the band played with an almost telepathic understanding certainly helped their cause further. The songs, which we all know are fantastic, were even more powerful played live in that kind of volume (12 by the sound of it, one further than even Spinal Tap). They generally went for the crowd pleasers : Cryptograms, Never Stops, Nothing Ever Happened, Agoraphobia et al, though they decided to skip Strange Light for some reason. A quiet spell in the middle where they could've played their slower, sparse songs, would've been welcomed, but hey, why am I complaining??
Unfortunately not all went without a hitch. Bradford, who celebrated the birthday that night, was constantly unsatisfied with the sound at the start, and just as he was starting to enjoy himself, found out that one of his pedals isn't functioning as it should. This inevitably annoyed him further, though he stopped short of having a tantrum. This aside Bradford talked quite a bit with the audience, cracked a few joke and was generally amusing (favourite quote of the night : "I only let you fuck my mother, cos you're my father!").
All in all definitely one of the best concert I've been to. My only regret is that I didn't talk to Bradford after the show...
