I didn't especially liked The Jam. I liked a few of their songs, but i thought their most popular album (All Mod Cons) is massively overrated. And they influenced Oasis, for Christ's sake. But after listening to a compilation of their singles and b-sides I had to change my mind. Paul Weller wrote songs in the classic british invasion style, soul, psychedelia, basically all form of pop music to ever dominate Britain. And it's not just the melodies. A closer look at his lyrics reveals an incredibly poetic side. He's the first musician I've ever heard, to compare himself to a paper in the wind, gliding upstream and downstream (on Boy About Town). Or That's Entertainment, a sardonic take on Thatcher-era Britain. Who cares if he uses the same song structure over and over again, or that most of his songs is built around C, D and G?
