the real 50th post

I'm sure none of you have done this, but it turns out that if you count the posts I've published, it'll only add to 49 instead of 50. Hmm... embarassing, though 49 isn't really a bad number for me. The 49 games unbeaten run that Arsenal achieved about 2 years ago comes to mind. Oh well. The actual reason for this mix up was actually because of a draft I wanted to post 2 days before the 49th post. I decided against it in the end, but didn't delete the damn draft. It was a long piece that took long to write, but comes out as too scholarly. Might attempt to edit it someday though, cos' the video I had in mind to go with the post is bloody brilliant.

I've been hearing soul like a maniac lately. It started out with all those Motown hits, but now I'm completely obsessed. Otis Redding has to be my current favorite artist, but my favorite song is definitely I Can't Help Myself by The Four Tops (who Orange Juice name-checked in their Motown tribute song I Can't Help Myself (see the connection here?) on their Rip It Up album). Northern soul is also something that interest me. It's basically soul, but obscure soul. Songs that didn't really become famous, but popular in Britain thanks to the mod movement (hear out the song Tainted Love by Gloria jones, the Soft Cell version is quite good, the Maryln Manson version down straight cringe worthy, but the original packs a lot of punch. It will change your life). There's one thing that annoys me though. Singles were the medium of those golden Motown and Stax days, and to delve deeper into this as of yet uncharted territories, I'm forced to do something against my principle, namely to buy compilations. Best Of Albums. The name sends shivers down my spine. But I don't really have much choice do I?
