So, my first post since plunging into life as student again. I almost felt bad i passed my exams last semester. I'll be trying to post as oftem as humanly possible of course, but can't really promise anything.
Anyway, I'll be going to the Belle & Sebastian concert in two weeks, and, because of that, started hearing Belle & Sebastian stuff again. I must say I'm not too impressed by their latest effort, which is why I'm hoping they'll play more of their back catalogue. What struck me during this latest Belle & Sebastian binge, is that they're music geeks. They're music fan doing music in hoping to emulate the joy their heroes brought to them through music. Hearing songs as diverse as Legal Man or Jonathan David or Lazy Line Painter Jane, you can't miss their glee at being able to record those pieces of music. They're music obsessed, too-shy-to-look-in-your-eyes kids having fun. I can't understand people who hate them because they're too "twee" or "cute" or "sugary" or whatever. Because this is music from underdogs for underdogs. Underdogs whose life revolves around music and just wanted to do their thing without any agenda. This innocence is exactly what I feel they've lost on their latest record.
I've also bought Talking Heads fourth, and arguably most important album Remain in Light. It's good, definetely worth a listen. But having heard the live versions on The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads, I'm a bit disappointed. Whereas, logically, the live version sounded organic, the album tracks struck me as a bit stiff and cold. It is the idea I suppose, this head on collision between the warmth of the instruments and vocals with the cold feeling of the production and the electronic beeps they occasionally mixed in. I would've definitely been more impressed had I not bought and heard The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads. Saw the Talking Heads film Stop Making Sense too. They were quite amazing live, though I wasn't too impressed by their horrible 80s fashion. David Byrne's big suit is hillarious though!
