first impressions of earth
How should I put this? I liked The Strokes. They had this vibe of coolness and messiness about them that was appealing. Even more so considering I was 18 the first time they came into prominence. But (I think) I've grown now. No longer do I think it's important to have cool looking people as a bandmate. Well, that's not entirely true. I still think appearance is important. But just not THAT important anymore. But I digress. What I've been wanting to say is that I had a taste of what's to come, that I had a sneak preview of the upcoming Strokes album First Impressions Of Earth..... To say it's horrible is a gross understatement. The opening track You Only Live Once is okay enough. But what came next was as forgettable as every boyband in the 90s. The lyrics has gotten worse, Julian Casablancas whinings are unbearable now that the distortions are gone, the lo-fi coolness that was is now gone. I only made it until the 11th track before I stopped to lament the fact that with this, the youthful arrogance and swaggerI learned from them have probably come to an end too. I've finally grown up....

I would have to agree with j.k. The Strokes needed a superb third album, not to mention a good dose of "something different" to cover their first two amazing, however one dimentional albums. Sadly, they misfire badly with 'first impressions of Earth".
Cool fashion does help, as j.k. accurately puts it. Nevertheless, innovation and consistance divides the one hit wonders and the Beatles or Velvet Undergrounds of the music world. The Beatles, as the Strokes, started with mind numbing simple beats however catchy they may have been. The thing is John, unlike Julian, expanded and matured The Beatles' sound which is yet to be heard from his New Yorker counterpart.
