Watching 11 people crammed on a stage playing (rock n roll) music should've been one of the highlight of my life. But instead I came home feeling strangely unsatisfied.
The firework was quite packed, what with PRINZ (a hip, what's-hot-type of magazine here in Munich) sponsoring the gig too and all. And after seeing The Most Serene Republic, my appetite was whetted for a musical orgy destined to blow my mind out. Alas it was not to be.
It started out pretty well, with the band belting rockers like KC Accidental and Ibi Dreams of Pavement pretty early on. It shoud've been a good gambit, setting the mood pretty early on, but then they continued with other songs in the same vein like Fire Eye'd Boy and Cause = Time, which for me kind of felt flat. I'm not sure, but after seeing their live performance, I've realized that they have this formula of making catchy songs with horn section at the end. It didn't seem that bad on the lp, but seeing it live is a bit boring after a few times. Maybe it has something to do with the venue too. H39 is pretty small, and maybe it affected their performance. They certainly lost a bit of the energy felt on the record. Lisa Lobsinger, the singer recruited to sing Feist's, Amy Millan's and Emily Haine's part contibruted to this problem too. Don't get me wrong. I like her very much. Her calm stage present, the hippy attire, the eccentric hair, her clear, beautiful voice. She's probably going to show up in my wet dreams a couple of time after this. But something just isn't right. Almost crime , one of my favorite BSS song just isn't made to be sung serenely. It's a rave up, and thus must be treated like one. (On another note, check out Reverie Sound Revue, Lisa's old band. Why they didn't make it is a mystery to me)
All in all, not a bad performance, but I certainly expected more from a great band with 11 members.
