i love the 80s

I used to hate 80s music. And who could blame me? The abomination that is Mötley Crue and Poison ruled the airwaves, and growing up in the 90s, i came to hate the 80s with a passion. And don't forget the fashion back then. By god, was it horrible.

Then i discovered The Smiths. It was a revelation. That tinny drum sound and that distinct 80s drum beat that i once found so annoying was suddenly exciting. I think it was a good thing that i first discovered the smiths via their first album. It sounded fresh and alive.

This Charming Man was the song that did it for me. The second Marr's opening riff started i was in awe. By the time the bass and the drums kicked in i was in love with the smiths. Morrissey's voice did unsettled me. Especially when he yelps as if someone just kicked him in the balls. But i've come to appreciate his vocal stylings. So much that i became a morrissey fan too. And the lyrics. There was something misterious about it. What the fuck was a jumped up pantry boy?? But i didn't care. It was pure joy. You can tell the band was having a blast.

And with that i loved the 80s. The fact that newer bands like Franz Ferdinand and Interpol keep mentioning that they were indebted to the 80s sparked my interest even more. Joy Division was next. And although i find New Order a bit overrated, they did make some of the best music of that era. Recently i discovered Josef K, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Felt et al. So although this current fashion for all things 80s is a bit annoying i'd say that the 80s ain't bad at all!
